Basic Information:
An individual may have a mobility limitation for any number of reasons. The individual may:
- have Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
- be paralyzed and use a wheelchair
- use crutches while recovering from knee surgery
Individuals with limited mobility may use mobility aids such as crutches, canes, walkers, wheelchairs, or scooters.
Etiquette Tips:
- Do not lean on an individual's wheelchair. A person's wheelchair is part of their personal space
- If you are speaking with someone who uses a wheelchair, position yourself at the person's eye level if at all possible
- Do not push someone who is using a wheelchair unless they ask for assistance
- Allow people who use mobility aids (crutches, canes, walkers, wheelchairs) to keep them within reach. Do not offer to put the mobility aids in the corner, "out of the way". Doing so takes away the individual's independence because they will need to rely on someone to retrieve their mobility aids before they can leave
- Some individuals who use wheelchairs may choose to transfer out of their wheelchairs into the available seating. Again, allow the individual to keep the wheelchair within reach if possible
- Do not pat a wheelchair user on the head
